  As a thermal insulation material that can reduce the surface temperature of the alloys, thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) ensure the normal operation of gas turbine high-temperature alloys components, which can improve the thermal efficiency and service life of the gas turbines [[1], [2], [3]]. 6–8?wt% Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia (6–8 YSZ) has been regarded as an industry standard and widely used in the past decades, due to its low thermal conductivity (2–3?W?m?1?K?1, 25–900?°C), high TECs (~10?×?10?6?K?1, 1200?°C) and excellent fracture toughness [4,5]. However, the phase transformation and low operating temperature of 6–8 YSZ have limited its development [6,7]. The future development of engines with requirements such as high thrust-to-weight ratio and high outlet temperature will require new TBC materials with low thermal conductivity, high melting point, high working temperature, excellent toughness, and high TECs [[8], [9], [10]]. In recent years, A3+2B4+2O7 oxides have been widely studied, due to their excellent structural stability and low thermal conductivity, they are considered as promising TBC materials [11], such as RE2Zr2O7 [[12], [13], [14]], La2Ce2O7 [15] and RE2Si2O7 [16]. Moreover, the thermophysical and mechanical properties of A2B2O7 oxides can be adjusted by replacing tetravalent cations with trivalent and pentavalent ions [17], for example, R2LaTaO7 (R?=?Dy, Y) [18] and Sm2FeTaO7 [19] compounds have been researched as TBC materials, they exhibit high TECs (~10?×?10?6?K?1, 1200?°C) and low thermal conductivity (~1.2?W?m?1?K?1, 1000?°C). The structures, hyperfine and magnetic properties of RE2FeTaO7 (RE?=?Y, Dy, Gd and Eu) compounds have been studied by Matsuda [20] et?al., their complex crystal structures and high molecular mass are consistent with the principles of oxides possessing low thermal conductivity [21]. The thermal stability of RE2FeTaO7 (RE?=?Pr–Yb, and Y) has been reported by Egorysheva [22] et?al., other RE2FeTaO7 have excellent phase stability below 1300?°C except Eu2FeTaO7. The application temperature of YSZ is less than 1200?°C, and its high thermal conductivity provides insufficient thermal insulation function. The weakness of RE2FeTaO7 is the low melting point, but it is stable at temperature less than 1300?°C. Therefore, RE2FeTaO7 may be applied as TBCs at temperature less than 1300?°C and provide excellent thermal insulation function, contributed to the low thermal conductivity. Hence, we have firstly characterized the thermal and mechanical properties (thermal conductivity, TECs, Young’s modulus, Vickers hardness, and fracture toughness) of RE2FeTaO7 (RE?=?Y, Eu, Gd, Dy) compounds, and they are proposed as promising TBCs.
